The study, published in the latest edition of the online journal Evolutionary Psychology by Canadian researchers at McMaster University, is the first to examine the relationship between the tone of voice and perceived infidelity, and allows us to understand the mechanisms underlying the choice of their companion.
Study participants were asked to listen to two versions of a song recorded by a male voice and a female singer, electronically manipulated to make entries higher or lower as needed.
They then asked who, they argue, would more easily cheated on their partner: “In terms of sexual strategy we found that both men and women use the tone of voice as a signal of future betrayal. In particular, they are led to believe betraying women with a high tone and the men with a deep shade, “says Jillian O’Connor, who led the study.
“Men with high testosterone levels have a lower voice, and women with significant levels of estrogen have a sharper voice – said David Feinberg, a consultant study -. High levels of these hormones are associated with adulterous behavior. Our findings indicate that people are somehow aware of this link.
