What Did That Dream Mean?
Do dreams really mean anything or is that just a new age concept? In fact, mainstream science does accept the idea that dreams have meaning. The meaning depends largely on the dreamer but it is believed that there are some dream symbols and situations that we all recognize.
If you dream that your house is in shambles, you may need to make some amendments. How you feel in such a dream may indicate how you feel about your life now. Also, the house in your dream may not look like your home now.

Dreams of Driving
Driving a car in your dream symbolizes control over your life. If the car is out of control, then maybe you feel anxious about being “in the cockpit” of your life. If the car crashes, it is another instance of anxiety. The speed of the car, where you are going- all of these say something about the direction your life is taking.
Dreams of Flying
Flying dreams often become lucid dreams, or dreams in which we know we’re dreaming. Flying happily indicates euphoria. YOU feel as if things are going your way, you are comfortable with tackling the challenges you do face. Flying dreams can also indicate that the dreamer is “rising above” their problems. They can also be sexual dreams.
Flying out of control, of course could indicate that you don’t think the feeling will last long and if you are afraid of going too high, it could indicate the fear of meeting new challenges.
Dreams of Falling
No, you won’t die in your sleep if you hit the ground. That’s just a myth. But the falling dream does indicate anxiety about life. You may feel that the “ground has been pulled out from under you”, that you have fallen short of a task or position in your waking life. Sigmund Freud thought this was a sexual dream: the dreamer fears he or she may soon fall into an indiscretion, a sexual misdeed. Then again, Freud thought everything was sexual.
* * *
My childhood dream about my neighbor morphing into a vampire made me laugh in the morning. I thought it was a silly kid’s dream and put it out of my head immediately. Now, I reflect upon what that single episode meant.
My bedroom was an island of security, a physical manifestation of my own mind. Here, I was in my own thoughts, so to speak. Then, I look over and there is the neighbor: a monster. I think I realized, even then, that I harbored a wariness of this person: she scared the crap out of me.
But why? She was always extra-nice to me, kind, polite.
As a child, I feared being judged more than anything. And I know now that the neighbor was a judge, a person who frightened me with her perfectionism. She was judgemental. She had an orderly, well-patterned life that made the disorganized chatter at my home seem like a senseless indulgence. I felt like a gypsy camping on the manor grounds in her presence.
The dream is a typical one for me. I feel like it is a voice that won’t let me hide. It keeps me in touch with my psyche.
Keeping a dream journal is a nice exercise in mental health- it’s also neat to look back on some of the dreams you’ve had over the years.

Great article, Stephanie. I don’t know if I ever dream in my sleep, I guess I must do, but there is never any recall in the morning. I have never had one dream that I could remember the next day. Perhaps I’m just brainless!
