Your Profile – Online Dating

For the gentlemen using online dating sites; a few tips that might improve your profile and your success with these sites.

Over the past few years I have had a blast meeting people online from various sites.  You might say that I have made a sport of it.  I know what you are thinking, “It’s easier for women,” and you’re right.  If you look at the site stats on most dating sites the male to female ratio is about 10:1.  But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done.

Like most things in life, you can only expect a return equivalent to the effort one puts in.  Typing, “Anything you want to know just ask,” while failing to include a photo is unlikely to get a response.  Why would a girl ask about you?  Nothing has been provided to differentiate this profile from the other dozens like it.  If you were looking to buy a car, would you respond to this ad:

Do a search for men.  Its ok, it won’t mean that you are looking for men.  You are just shopping the competition.  What you will find is a line up of mug shot-like photos, those with bright glare, taken off a mirror, and headless shots taken of the neck down.  If you look through enough photos you might find one or two with a smile or some personality.

So here are a few profile suggestions:

1.  Much as a resume should contain certain bits of information for a potential employer, online profiles should include certain information for potential partners.  These things are outlined for you in a site’s basic questions.  Answer them!

2.  Post a pic with smile and some personality.  Even if you are not the hottest guy in the world, you are going to look a lot better than the mug shots and close-ups of polo shirts that will come up in search results.  You will definitely stand out.

3.  Take the time to type a few sentences in the description section.  Why would a girl be interested in you?  If you don’t know, then maybe that’s the problem.  If you don’t like yourself, you can’t expect someone else to.  Show a little confidence and name a few things about yourself to set yourself apart from the rest.
