A Few Tips for Working at Home with a Spouse Who’s Been Laid Off

A few tips on how to get along while sharing workspace with a laid off spouse.

With our economy is the state that it’s in, more and more Americans are losing their jobs, and more Americans are working from home as well.

If your family is one of the thousands who have been laid off, here are a few tips on how to work at home when your spouse has been laid off.

  • Be Supportive.  Take time to talk to your spouse, help scour through the want ads and just let them know that you are there for them.
  • Establish a routine.  You’ve got the office in the afternoon, your spouse can have it in the mornings to search for jobs and schedule interviews. Find some routine that works out best for the both of you.  It can even be Monday’s, Wednesday’s, Friday’s for you and Tuesday’s and Thursday’s for them.
  • Be understanding.  Losing a job can be devastating, not only for your spouse, but for you too.  Tensions and insecurities can be high during this stressful time.  Your spouse can feel rejected or have low self-esteem, so resist the temptation to nag.
  • Be Upbeat.  Always have a positive attitude, no matter how you feel.
  • Don’t Brag.  You may be the only one in the home bringing an income in, but anything can happen in this economy.  Be thankful and count your blessings!

Good article and advice. I was in the same situation about 12 years ago. Me and the wife got along great except i tended to be a little frisky towards the wife a little too much. I guess all that time on my hands that i wasn’t use to having made me that way. She tolerated me, but was darn glad when i went back to work. Well done.
