Are You Comfortable with Public Display of Affection?

by sunshine926 in Relationships, November 13, 2009

Walking down the street, hand in hand with your sweetheart. All of a sudden he puts his hand inside your jeans. Do you care that there are other people around or just continue to mind your own business.

At a shopping center the other day, a young couple sat on the boardwalk. Her legs were wrapped around his waist while his arms hugged her tiny petite frame completely. I glanced through the glass window of a jewelry store for a few seconds and then walked by the couple again. They continued making out for a long time. Although this is not considered to be forbidden behavior, such displays may sometimes be considered to be in bad taste.

First, let’s talk about Public Display of Affection and what this stands for. Public Display of Affection or PDA is the physical demonstration of affection in public. While holding hands and kissing is not considered objectionable, certain types of behavior such as grinding and heavy petting, which normally occur in bars and clubs are intimate displays of affection and should be left for you and your partner in the privacy of your home. While some people enjoy the attention of being eccentric, others might not feel too comfortable engaging in this type of behavior in front of total strangers.

In most of Europe, it is normal to see a couple walking down the street hand in hand and kissing. There is nothing wrong with that if you ask me, however in the United States Armed Forces, PDA or public display of affection is looked down upon. In Canada, it is also common to see couples holding hands and kissing in public. And even grinding or dancing up close and personal is acceptable according to studies. In Latin America, it is quite acceptable to see women who are not a couple french kissing, holding hands and hugging each other according to Wikipedia. In the United States in Miami Beach, it is also acceptable to see members of the gay community walking down Lincoln Road holding hands with their partners.

PDA is becoming common in the Philippines. I have no problem couples holding hands, but I kissing is in my considered opinion should remain private.

I think there should be a limit as to the type of affection you show in public.

Gay or straight, kissing and holding hands in public is fine, but there are limits and I don’t want to see anything more intimate than this in public.

Well said. There is a limit for public display. Not more than a passionate hug.

Great article, I think you touched on some interesting points. I don’t mind the kissing and holding hands, maybe even a hand on the bottom but I think all else should be private.
