Speaking from experience, i agree that arranged marriages last longer. Coming from a very traditional family, i was the only one out of my three sisters that refused an arranged marriage. I chose to marry for love. All three of my sisters are still happily married and i’m the only one that ended in divorce. The reason for that is that parents have more experience with the ups and downs of marriage; furthermore, parents are more familiar with the potential spouse and their family upbringing. If problems occur throughout the marriage, both families come together in resolving the issues.

The reason why arrange marriages last longer is as follows: A girl who accepts the spouse her parents provide for her is a dutiful daughter. If a girl respects her parents, she will respect her husband and be a good wife. But a girl who insists on marrying for love, perhaps even against her parents wishes, is not a good daughter and will not be a good wife. For this reason, her marriage is not likely to last.

I think that the main reason that love marriages fail is that we choose partners who are physically attractive to us. Physical attraction creates strong emotions, which we might think is love, but it really is just infatuation. During this passionate stage, we overlook the other person’s flaws and habits, because we believe that ‘we are in love’, and ‘love is all that matters’. Then reality strikes, the infatuation wears off, and we start to see the flaws and we get annoyed by the habits. Some people think that this means they have ‘fallen out of love’, when really, this is where true love starts.
