Being in a Relationship and Having Friends of the Opposite Sex
When two people are involved in a romantic relationship, one of the trickiest problems the couple will eventually have to deal with is maintaining friendships with the opposite sex.
Dealing with a jealous partner may be extremely difficult on the relationship, so it is important to always be open with one another about any friendships that you may have with the opposite sex. As much as possible, introduce your partner to all your friends, so that your partner can be at ease and know whom you are with when you are out. If your partner views your friends as real people instead of figments of his or her imagination, then they probably won’t be as insecure about you hanging out with them.
Each and every time that you go out with your friend, make sure that you are open about it with your partner. Don’t ever hide anything from your partner, even if it’s something as trivial as going out for a cup of coffee with a friend. Leaving your partner in the dark about your whereabouts can be the beginning of a relationship based on doubt and insecurities.
Make sure to prioritize your partner when it comes to choosing between spending time with friends and spending time with them. You may also want to consider bringing your partner along when going out with your friends. This way, your partner can get to know your friends and vise-versa.
When involved in a relationship, it may be beneficial if you and your partner have a heart-to-heart talk early on and establish an agreement regarding friendships and what both of you can be comfortable with. Can you watch a movie with the opposite sex or are you only allowed to have lunch or dinner out? Talking about situations such as these would be a great way to raise any concerns or bring out any fears and insecurities. Make it clear to your partner that they have the right to speak up the moment that they feel uncomfortable about any of your friendships with the opposite sex.
If the time does come that your partner expresses unhappiness with one of your friendships with the opposite sex, make sure to never belittle these feelings or make your loved one feel foolish for feeling such. These feelings are very real and should always be taken seriously.
In order to have a healthy and loving relationship, you and your partner must make a commitment to be honest and truthful to one another at all times.
