Dating in the Philippine Setting

How people in the Philippines perceive the term “dating”.

All I’m trying to say is we tend to equate dating with courting. You have one date with someone and people start thinking that you should go out again. That you must be on a couple more dates and must eventually end up together — as a couple. It seems a big taboo when you take someone else on a date next week. Everything is ruined. The person you just went out with last week will stop talking to you like you don’t exist. You will stop looking each other in the eye like you were never acquainted. People start asking you questions. “What happened to __ ? Didn’t you like __ ?” The fact of the matter is, you did. But whatever happened to choosing before selecting? How can you say that the grass is greener on your side of the road when you haven’t even crossed to check out the pasture on the other?

I’m not saying that you go out there and be a sl*t or a manwh*re. But if maybe we take this liberty just one step further…If we could just be like Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, Charlotte, and the men in New York City, then maybe there would be less heartbreaks and more friendships saved. (Mind you, the stress here is not on engaging in pMS every time you go out on a date…it is on seeing dating in a different light. Take it as a learning experience — you get to talk to different people, you learn about the world and discover what you really like/want.) Besides, your date taking someone out this week doesn’t mean you’re being dumped. Maybe he/she is just checking out other options. So you should too. Move on. Date. If he/she calls again for another date, and you like him/her, go ahead. Go out again. Maybe this time, you’ll both find out that you really like each other. Or maybe, you’ll find out you don’t like him/her after all. Who knows? I say, As long as you choose to move on and be happy, everything will fall in its proper place…in time.
