Divorce and Its Timing

Divorce has become a simple routine these days. Does one get married just to separate out after a few months or after a long period of co-habitation? There is a need to think about its longevity. If necessary, force a marriage to take deep roots.

Going through the background to a number of divorce cases, one would get an impression that a divorce is treated as a kind of joke or something akin to a banana skin which could be tossed away anytime anywhere.

There was a case in India, some years back, of a particular film star married and divorced her man on the same day – Marriage in the morning and Divorce in the late afternoon. This is a record, don’t you think? And the concerned actress remains a spinster till date and would be so possibly till her death. Who on earth would ever come forward to live with such a woman !

Then, some marriages don’t last more than a few months; this is so with IT professionals whose working hours just don’t match. Thus, they never get to see each other at all, much less sharing a bed. And gong goes the divorce bell.

Some marriages go on for a few months like a freewheel action. Even a freewheel comes to a stop sometime. The reason, total incompatibility in every department of life. I wonder if such couples had ever made a serious effort to adjust to each other.

Strangely the other day a news item conveyed that a couple had applied for a divorce after 40 years of marriage. Could you beat it? Forty years of togetherness goes up in smoke for what reason the news item doesn’t say.

Just as marriage is not a fun- for- a few days and is something to be taken very seriously and lived through to make it a tremendous success, divorce too should not be treated like a kite, that could be cut off any moment.

I feel that we need to enact a law in every country that divorce will not be granted under any circumstances or under any kind of plea, if the marriage is less than an year old or if the marriage has lasted a minimum of 25 years. The courts should not entertain any petition for annulment of marriage from these two categories.

I propose that besides rejecting the divorce- request, the court must command the couple in the loudest possible tone, to GET LOST, go and live together in the same house for at least the next 12 months, come what may, and then come to the house of justice if they still insist on a divorce.

If the law of any land enjoys the power to solemnize a marriage, it has equal power to see that a marriage lasts, last as long as possible and to deny separation until some minimum period has elapsed.
