Divorce is an Easy Thing

Much as I hate this word, it happens to be in vogue very much the world over. What cannot be stopped has to be endured, goes an adage and I go by it. But what worries me most is, that two judges don’t look at an issue/crime with the same legal eye!

To digress a bit: It is my experience that two doctors with the same qualifications and experience don’t seem to concur on the diagnosis and the medicine suited for whatever the analysis. So, you will get two opinions and two sets of medicines. Sometimes such disagreements may crop up even in the same hospital between two departments. But then doctors are doctors.

And now, here is another instance of two judges with two opposite views

on a single issue.

There was a case in India some weeks back of asoftware engineer wife applying for adivorce on the ground of ‘cruelty’. What are the details of the wonderful cruelty ground? That her husband used abusive words, sometimes condemned her as an unworthy woman and so on. The judge revolted and shook his head in total disgust. “Listen lady, a man when is under some kind of tension could use harsh words at you. And you come to me for divorcing him all because he called you an ‘idiot’? Nothing doing. Case dismissed. Go and live with him and make up.”

The newspapers have not reported any details of the post-judgment behaviour on the part of both.

And now comes another news item which isfar removed from the ‘abuse’ syndrome. A judge has accepted ‘late return’ as a justifiable cause for divorce. The wife’s stand was that her husband returned home late from work and never informed her about his lateness. Presto indeed.

Men and women be careful. You may be devoted to each other but out of frustration you may feel like taking advantage of the verdict discussed above which may act as a forerunner too. You could find yourself in the dock for sneezing loudly, for not passing the salt shake at the dining table, for not giving a ‘see you’ kiss, for not doing almost anything for that matter. Here is a liberal judge who has all his sympathy for women and he will grant you the divorce just for the asking ! Eh?
