Friendship Over the Web
Some thoughts on the reality here.
When it comes to friendship and its virtual form, I wonder how much I can really count on the latter. Just recently as study showed that when people meet on the Internet, the supposed chemistry they established dissolves very quickly when they meet in real life. So why put up with the storefront?
I guess for many it is just titillating to create an image which is unreal, that may be one of the reasons but I think it is mainly due to our own constructs which fall short of what the person really is like. Now people will argue about why visuals should have a bearing on what the person’s true nature is and I think they have plenty to do with that. Just body language alone is enough to see if their future soul mate, friend or lover is as honest or caring as he or she comes across over the Internet.
However there is a greater degree of surety when one can see someone on a web cam. Here at least you can see some facial expressions and occasional eye contact. Critics here will say that some people are guarded over the Internet and don’t look into the camera at all and that may come across as not being interested in the other party. Personally plenty of people are camera shy yet quite interested in who they meet so I don’t think one can judge character based on this. But seeing how the person looks at you over the web cam would be revealing, I think.
