Loving people with addictions…

Loving An Alcoholic Understanding Addictions

Mini love story...

She spoke to me in words that came out like poetry.” I saw him today,” she said, looking out the window of Frisch’s, while tears covered her pretty blue eyes. My heart sank as I just sat there and listened to her story.” We sneaked a cigarette in the bathroom he was working on at the complex,” she smiled. “Mom, I do believe he has changed since he met Ali. She is more than a grandchild to him, she is a teacher of love. Amazing, someone so tiny can teach unconditional love. I truly do believe he can love her without feeling afraid she will abandon him like his parents did. He still drinks but he has grown emotionally. I know he’s not in love with his new girlfriend but she’s better than being alone, he said.

Jami said any harsh feelings with her dad had dissolved from watching how he care for Ali so much. “When I saw him pulling her through the snow in that cardboard box, like he used to me, it healed the deepest hurts, and it has been worth it all. I really feel like his daughter, now. It’s the way I have always wanted it to be with us.”

Eve found my eyes and never left them during a comment, she said went deeper than the heart. He knows now what it’s like to need to be responsible in a family but I saw through her pain and felt her love and hope, in believing that it took all of these experiences to find the true love of a family.

One might think this family was more screwed up at this stage of their lives because of going in so different directions: Financial and emotional meltdowns, new locations. Jami trying to be a good nurse with a new baby, a new girlfriend in the mix and all the many pressures of every day living, but I could sense things coming together for the good.

She said to me like the three year old that always amazed me, “I don’t know if we can ever be back together as a family, but in our hearts, we’re finally there.” I told her time is important . As hurtful as divorcing him twice had been, sometime baby steps are so necessary in finding the good in us, the things in life worth keeping. I knew they still loved each other, through it all. No one knows for sure about tomorrow. The scripture came to mind: “All things are possible to those who believe.” -Jesus
