How to Make Your Marriage Work

by Tina V in Relationships, September 28, 2008

Written for the couple that has been married for a few years and find they are having problems with communication.

First you have to accept the fact that marriage is a job!  A successful marriage is something both people, the husband and the wife have to work at, don’t worry to much though, it can be a fun and rewarding job.

Take the time to talk to each other, ask your spouse how their day was, ask about their friends or their job, talk about current affairs you hear on the news or radio.

Try not to dwell on the annoying things your spouse does.  Nobody is perfect so its only natural that there are one or two things your spouse does that annoys you, they probably did these things before marriage and you knew about it when you entered into this relationship so accept it and try to concentrate on the things your spouse does that you like or love.

When your spouse walks in the door after a stressful and exhausting day at work greet them in a loving and caring way.  Don’t start demanding they do things as soon as they step inside the front door, this will only cause your spouse to become frustrated and angry. Give them some downtime to unwind and let them relax.  They can cut the grass or cook dinner later.

Do nice things for each other, it’s o.k. to go out of your way for someone you love.  Look for the opportunity to help the person you love.   If you are doing it for your loved one it shouldn’t be a job, it should be a pleasure and will come easily if you only try.

Compliment each other on things you do well.  Everyone loves a compliment and it is a great way to show support.  It is also a great way to start a conversation and invite friendship into the relationship.  It is important to be friends and like each others company.

Go out together, friends can come to but it is important to spend some quality bonding time together.  Going places and doing things in a positive environment will help open the lines of communication and strengthen the friendship.  It can be something simple like going for a walk or out to dinner.

Every marriage has obstacles they must overcome, there may be times when you think you hate each other but the key is to talk about it and try to find a way to get past it.  Never give up trying.  Marriage can be the most rewarding and lasting experience of your life if you only try.
