How to Win a Friend

Simple tips on how to attract and find friends worth keeping.

Friends are like precious gems that need to be treasured and taken care of. Lots of them are scattered along the road, people who come at your aide when you are in great need, people who make you smile when you are sad, who cheer you up when you are down, who make difficult things easier with a helping hand.

But, how will you win friends? Oftentimes we take them for granted because we believe they are just around. We become so unaware of their importance that we lose them unconsciously.

Friendships develop over shared interests and hours of chit-chat. So, be brave enough to start conversations. Open up and slowly share your secrets, fears, doubts and anxieties. Then, you will realize that you are not alone in this world, that someone experiences difficult and even funny situations just as you are.

Offer help whenever you can. Often, we see strangers who need assistance, and sometimes it is through sparing our time in helping them, that we find new friends. Offering a shoulder to cry on, a warm hug or just words of encouragement will help attracting not just friends but true comrades who will be there for you in times when you, yourself, need a hug or encouragement.

Be friendly and flash that genuine smile even to people you hardly know. Friendly gestures often attract the same. If you are open to the idea of having new friends then show them that you really are worth their time and companionship.

Find moments where you can share a laugh. Isn’t it good to share laughter with someone? When you start to laugh with another person, a connection is being created. You are starting to be comfortable with each other. And of course, share your tears. Sharing your problems or moments when you are down can help strengthen your blooming friendship. It is in sharing the things that make you sad, say problems, that a friend will feel that he is well trusted.

Learn to accept his weaknesses. A person is without any flaws. You can truly love a person if you start accepting who he really is. If you want to keep a friend, learn to live with his imperfections because that makes him who he is. And it is through understanding your differences that you can live harmoniously.

And finally, dream together. A friend would be happy knowing that someone is there to help him achieve his goals in life. Impossible things become possible whenever there is an assuring pat in the back telling you that all dreams can come true.

Now, that you have a friend, keep him.
