Internet Dating

Ever considered internet dating? Decided against it because it wasn’t the “done thing”? Well, I am living proof that it really does work.

Kissed too many frogs? Well I certainly had…

The Dilemma

Back in 2005 I was a single mum with a 5 year old son. All my friends were either free and single and able to go out looking for Mr Right, or married with kids, and already had Mr Right.
I was stuck at home, working full time, the only thing I looked forward to coming home to was a bottle of Merlot or Shiraz, sadly, not a nice man warming a place for me on the sofa!

I was stuck in a rut basically…

What to do about it?

The only person that was going change the situation for me, was me. My next best friend (after the wine) was my trusty computer. It was my access to the outside world, and all I tended to use it for was emailing friends and family, and shopping.

I joined Dating Direct (UK), and tentatively showed put together a profile. It was not an easy task, trying to sell yourself to an abundance of eligible bachelors, especially when your own confidence is at an all time low. But I knew that I had to properly ‘market’ myself, in order to attract the attention of the type of man I wanted to meet and spend the rest of my life with.

Skeptical? who isn’t when it comes to the unknown (and seemingly frowned upon) territory of online dating.

The hardest bit was probably obtaining a photo of myself, that would in some way appear attractive.

The ’self take’ image is not always going to be a winner! I’m not unattractive in any way, but when your head is tilted to the side and your arm is in the shot, it does look a touch amateur huh? (yes I’m sure I’m not the only one)

On a roll!

Well whatever I did obviously worked…

Within days of joining I received several emails from varying categories of men. I must say, if I’d got nothing else from this experience, the type of men that think they are suitable for you (when they absolutely are NOT), was totally hilarious! I’m talking 65 year old men living in Texas USA, when I was 30, living in Sussex UK.

I went on a few dates, but the frogs just kept appearing thick and fast! (I didn’t think amphibians could join internet dating sites?)

I was at a pretty low point, disillusioned by the hours I’d invested ‘marketing’ myself to the would be Mr Rights. The cost of membership. The general bad luck I had been dealt.
Well worth the wait
I’d almost given up, when one May Bank holiday I received a humorous and cheeky email from a gorgeous looking guy. He fitted the bill too much… right age group, had all his own teeth, didn’t smoke, didn’t mind I had a son, lived 1 mile down the road from me.

I was pretty down hearted at this point, and did not latch onto his ‘advances’ immediately, in fact, uncharacteristic of me, I took days to reply to his emails.

But something appealed, very much.

I took the bull by the horns and we agreed to meet one sunny day. He appeared in the street, better looking than I ever imagined, gripping a bottle or red and a bottle of white wine!

The rest is fabulous history…

From the day we met, we have never been separated (apart from me being in hospital). We moved in with each other within weeks… and 18 months later have just had a beautiful baby boy together (in between that we’ve bought a house, relocated, and got a dog!).

We only have internet dating to thank for our chance in a million meeting. We would never have met out in public, so would never have met…

As my lovely Mr Right says, it was the best £40 he spent when he purchased me!

Internet dating, we strongly recommend it.
