Is There Such a Thing as a Soulmate?
Single people say they are looking for their perfect soulmate but is there really such a thing?
In thinking about relationships and questioning friends, you hear the term ‘soulmate’ bandied about throughout the conversation and around in the media. It seems to be on the ‘wishlist’ of every available single person that you come across, but is the term over-used? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term soulmate as a “person temperamentally suited to another” these are people that connect on every level and stirs us deeply. Is there truly only ‘one’ person that matches us in our mind and spirit?
So what do you think? Is there more than one person that can be that ‘special someone’ or should you spend your life hunting for that one person and hope that you actually meet? Does it just have to be at the right time, the right place or with the right thinking when you meet someone to be your soulmate or is this ordained by a higher power?
Ok, Ok, so what happens when people are sure they have found their soulmate, only to end up in divorce courts years later? Is there such thing as a ‘do-over’ in regards to soulmates? . If there is such thing as one, if you saw them on the street, would you know, hey that is the one for me? Does one have an epiphany when meeting someone that is destined to be their soulmate? What about the dates prior to finding your ‘soulmate’? Where they just a waste of time? Or do they help you discover who you are?
As for me, I honestly believe that there is no one ‘special person’ for each of us, but that love is a crapshoot and that there are several people that could be the person that makes us whole (ick!) I wonder if we are romanticizing this whole concept of that one special person for everyone?
Are we as people naturally romantic? Do most of us wear rose tinted glasses when it comes to love? Does the idea of a soulmate comes from all those fairy tales and dime store romances? You know, the ones that by the end of the book everything is just peachy keen between the couple. But is that real life? If your soulmate is puking her guts out or is exhausted and sleep deprived because of the new baby, will she still be your soulmate?
Or can we simplify the concept a little bit? Maybe a soulmate is a person that likes everything that you also like about yourself? Does a soulmate have to be one of the opposite sex? I have heard that twins are so close to each other, they know almost what the other is thinking, surely that would be contribute to being each others soulmate? Or what about a place that you feel your soul belongs? If you are a transplanted English person, that lives in another country but always longs for England, and once you return to those English shores, does your soul feel at home there? Can two friends be soulmates?
How about being your own soulmate or does that sound too self centered? Well no matter if you do believe in the idea of a soulmate or not, that is up to you. But if you do, don’t worry about it, because if it is meant to be, it will happen and while you are waiting, enjoy your life!
