Making a Long-Distance Relationship Work

You cannot help who you fall for, and many times the person that we fall for happens to live in a different state.  This happens more often because of dating sites like eHarmony or meeting people on other sites like Hot Or Not and myspace.  When we get into a relationship that is long distance there are things we need to remember and things that we should do to help keep it healthy and working instead of it falling apart on us.  Communication is always a big part of long distance relationships, you need to be honest about everything and not hide anything from one another.  One of the best things I have found is set up like at date time where you do nothing but talk to this person.

There is a program called Skype which allows you to have a video chat with someone else and doing this helps with the longing to see each other.  While you cannot be together to hug and kiss, you are still able to look at each other and see expressions when you say different things especially “I love you”  I love seeing the expression of my boyfriend when I tell him that.  I think sometimes that communication is nothing unless you understand how each other acts and reacts to different things.  I think seeing expressions is important as much as it is to talk about everything including feelings, fears, and doubts.

Make time for each other. I know everyone has their lives, but you need to make time for each other.  While it is okay to go out with friends and do different things, but you need to make special time for you loved one.  When i say you make special time for each other i mean you make sure you do nothing else while you talk.  No distractions like the television or other phone calls or text messages.  If you are talking via phone turn the television off as with the computer.  That shows your partner that they are the most important thing to you and that they mean enough to have your undivided attention.

When you are together you should take turns going to each other.  Guy shouldn’t always have to pay to fly out or drive to gal, and vise versa.  Take turns.  When you are together make sure you have enough alone time together as well as enough time with friends and family.  You want to spend time with them so they know that you care about their friend and family member and would think of hurting them.  With long distance relationships it is a family and friends that your partner will turn to advice about things, so you want them to trust you as much as your partner.

Long distance relationships are hard and we need to work hard at making them work.  There are many things that one can do to help keep the relationship happy and healthy.  Temptations will be there, they are always there when you make sure you show your love for one another.  You want to make sure your lover knows they are loved by you and you will always be loyal and there is nothing to worry about.  Long distance relationships can work, they just take a lot of hard work.
