The Science behind French kissing… Need I say more?

A smack, smooching, laying one on someone,  a peck, whatever you want to call it, the majority of us have kissed and been kissed by someone.

Hi everyone. I am Nacomy Blue, aspiring author and I will be your lecturer today. Wow, I can already hear the groans but I promise it will be fun.

So let’s start at the beginning.  According to this guy up here, kissing evolved from mothers nursing their young by passing broken pieces of food mouth to mouth.

Yup, kinda like that. And while you might be thinking ewwwwww, come on you have to admit it’s touching and just a wee bit cute (or maybe it’s just me? It can’t be just me, can it?).

Moving on…

So this grew to be a sign of love and affection.

You like me must be wondering, where the hell was the shift from maternal gesture to sexual act?

The Science

Dopamine

Serotonin

Kissing raises levels of neurotransmitters called dopamine, which causes feelings of craving and desire and serotonin, which elevates your mood and creates that tiny spark for obsessive thoughts about the person you’re kissing (might explain why you became a stalker).

Also there is a jump in oxytocin, the ‘love hormone’ which is released during an orgasm triggering attachment between couple. Oxytocin is released in high levels in new mothers. This is thought to create the lifelong attachment between mother and child.
