Relationships Throughout Life

There are many different relationships encountered thoughout life. This is a short article explaining some of them in comparing them to the ones encountered in the novel Of Mice and Men.

There are many relationships that you will encounter throughout your life time. Some of which will be meaningless, others that will last a life time. Most people would think of a relationship as two people who are dating or are married but in reality you can have simple relationships with almost everyone you know in the form of a friendship or acquaintanceship.  A relationship could be something as simple as the cashier at your favorite register or your best friend from 1st grade that doesn’t remember your name. Or a relationship could be as important as your first love or the beautiful woman you decided to spend your life with. As small and as meaningless or as great and as amazing each of these relationships are they all have some kind affect in your life, even if you don’t realize it.

Many would not think that there is a relationship between you and someone who rings up your groceries. I’m sure you recognize their face when you walk into the store and you’ve exchanged words with that person. Just by those two things you have created a simple relationship with that person. This person might be remembered by you because you share a similarity, their kind to you or maybe they just do their job well and you appreciate them. It may not be of any importance and it might not be someone you want to spend time with or talk to regularly but they have become slightly more than an acquaintance in your life.

In the book Of Mice and Men there are many examples of the relationships that form unexpectedly in life. Many of the people throughout the book do not fit the description society would like them to so they become outsiders. The relationships these people find between each other came up because of the people they work for or with, the people they travel with, the people they come along while on their life journey but few fit the description of society and it brings them closer. There are many reasons for people not to fit into the description of society, especially in the 1930’s, including color, sex and disabilities. Rather everyone who does not belong in society become an outcast these people come together to create close friendships. And why should they not? They have all experienced rejection of society and they share many other things in common, such as skin color. Who knew something so small could bring two people together.

Relationship is something very subtle and I don’t think there is anyone who can get rid of it.
