Seven Tips for When You “Say It with Flowers”

Say what you want about the temporary nature of flowers, their high cost, or the industry that promotes them at every turn, but the fact is: Flowers Work. You and I don’t get it and probably never will, but the women in your life certainly do.

The flowers wilt in a few days and you laid out fifteen or fifty bucks. Yeah, so what? What’s your point? You need to buy them often. Period. Trust me on this. I know what I’m talking about. I’ve been married 20 years. Sometimes you need to buy flowers two or three days in a row! (I can hear the whines now!!)

So, if you’re with me so far, here are a few tips for when you decide to blow the dust off that wallet of yours and buy your women some decent flowers.

1. Do not ever complain about the flowers to the person you buy them for. That’s a big no no. Don’t whine about how you went out of your way or how much it cost or how wonderful you are for doing such a sacrificial thing.
2. Occasionally go for the more expensive flowers instead of the Walmart 12 long stemmed roses for $13. That works, yes, but you look cheap. Splurge a little.
3. Once in a while have the flowers delivered to where your loved one will be during the day.  She will be the envy of all her co-workers or her friends.
4. Once or twice a year buy some “just because.” Pencil it in your Outlook six or seven months out.
5. If you bring home flowers and she’s not there yet, set them up in a vase and let her discover them. Don’t boast about how great you are for buying them. Let her tell you that.
6. When you go or when you get home from a business trip, make sure there are flowers at home for her to enjoy.
7. Women like flowers. They’ll say that chocolate will be a good substitute. If you do buy chocolate, get flowers too. You can always get the flowers without the chocolate, but don’t buy the chocolate without the flowers. If you have to choose, choose flowers.

There it is, Gentlemen. Get out there and get your girl some flowers. No bellyaching or whining about it. Smile when you present them to her. She’ll love you for them.
