Six Ways Friends Can be Toxic to a Marriage

This article discusses the negative influence that friends can have on the marriage relationship. It covers areas, such as, jealousy, temptation to cheat, and how friends can monopolize one partner’s time.

Opposite Sex Friends can be Toxic by Wanting Their Friend to be Their Mate

This problem can swing either way. A man may want the woman, or a woman may want the man. Either way, the friend will work hard to woo one spouse away from the other. This can take the form of someone who always seems to need one of the couple to come and help with a project. It might be work friend who engineers reasons to have to stay late at work as the only two in the building. Eventually, if the spouse allows this relationship to stroke his or her ego, they will probably cross the line into adultery.

Well-Meaning Friends can be Toxic by Giving Very bad Advice to one Spouse

If one member of the couple feels the need to vent to friends about the shortcomings of the other, friends who mean well will often give advice based on one side of the story. The problem with this is that advice that only knows half of the facts is rarely productive and is usually detrimental. These friends can do a lot of harm by telling someone how to solve their problem. Frequently, the complaining spouse is as guilty for what is going on at home as the spouse receiving all of the blame.

Friends Can Hurt a Marriage by Putting Financial Pressure on it

Most people believe that everyone that they associated with are as financially secure as they are. This is rarely the case. However, for the sake of friendship, the married person may act the big spender while doling out the food budget or the house payment to have a great time out with friends. It is important that married people always remember their financial obligations first. If they go broke, they are hurting more people than themselves. Somehow, a homeless family seems far worse than a homeless individual.
