Slutwalks – What are They and Who are They for?

A look at the recent global trend of SlutWalks.

If you live in any large Westernized city with a female population there’s a good chance you’ve heard the term “SlutWalk” thrown around. Yes, it is a parade of people identifying with the word slut. No, they’re not there for your pleasure. The SlutWalk is a movement embraced by feminists to take control of the word “slut”, end slut shaming, and bring light to the double standards society has forced upon all of us.

The first SlutWalk happened in Toronto in response to a local police officer who had claimed that to stop rape women should “avoid dressing like sluts.” Had this been the first time anyone had said anything like that, the comment might have just passed. Unfortunately, victim blaming has been a constant thing. Instead of the rapist being held accountable, victims are grilled over and over about the things they said, did, drank, and wore. Being branded a slut for being raped just adds even more insult to a very brutal injury.

SlutWalk happened April 3rd, 2011 in Toronto and since then the movement has been gaining speed. All over the world men and women are joining together to demand accountability and for the freedom to be themselves without judgement.

So who are these SlutWalks for, exactly? Everyone. Men, women, and everyone else come together for these. Feminism isn’t just for women and safety is for everyone. Dignity even more so. These are marches for respect and basic humanity.

Very nice share MissAthena. It’s amazing how ignorant some people can be. A woman could have on a potato sack and she still looks like prey to a rapist.

I liked the statement “Clothing is an option, rape is not” I think the world should know it.
