The 10 Commandments of Friendship

The ultimate guide to scoring a friendship you can etch in stone forever.

Every person you meet is a potential friend. Your seemingly fragile little sister may prove to be an incredible not-a-drop-sponge when it comes to keeping secrets. That irritating get-in-your-face classmate may one day be your study buddy. Your very conservative mother may turn out to be your fave shopping partner. Want to make your friendships endure for a lifetime? Here are ways to care for the relationships that truly matter to you.

1.       Thou shalt be thoughtful

Little surprises from a pal always bring a smile even to the most depressed or harassed person. There’s a particular warm and fuzzy feeling one gets whenever he or she receives a “just-wanna-say-hi” phone call or text, or a letter from your very dear pal 9that would be you!). These gestures are a simple way of showing them that they are love and thought of.

What to do: Send a childhood buddy a card for no reason at all. You don’t have to give her a super elaborate musical, pop-up or expensive card in order to make her jump with glee. Why not make the card yourself? That would really show her how special she is to you. Cliché as it sounds, it really is the thought that counts anyway.

2.       Thou shalt learn to say sorry

Face it, you will have disagreements with people once in a while. It’s all part of life. These may range from minor arguments. Whatever the case may be, knowing how to apologize will help you resolve your conflicts sooner.

What to do: Two words; “I’m sorry.” A little humility never hurt anyone. If you know that you’re the one at fault, don’t let your pride get the best of you. Be the first to apologize and while you’re at it, be sincere with you sorry.

3.       Thou shalt forgive and forget

Having an enemy is one of the worst feelings in the world. You’re always afraid to walk into a party for fear that “she” might be there. So let bygones be bygones. Nothing or no one is worth keeping your blood level at an all-time high. Even if it is the hardest thing to do, learn to forgive. And instead of burying the hatchet in her head, just release your remaining frustration through conservative ways like indulging in a hard game of tennis or brisk walking.
