The Dangers of Dating in The Digital Age

Dating sites are all the rage at the moment, but what dangers lie in them?

It’s not just crooks to be wary of; it’s those that will break your heart. Some people use dating sites to organize affairs; another dramatically increasing statistic. More alarmingly the statistics are rising in the sense that it’s the woman that’s cheating. Has it not nearly always been the case that when you hear about cheating you often immediately think of the man? Well know the woman have found their ideal playgrounds, hunting down men, seducing them and having casual liaisons based on keeping their home life safe.  If you peruse a lot of these websites you’ll often find people that allure to the fact they are too busy to date, and while happy to commit they have “work commitments” that they have to keep. This allows both men and women to get away with a great deal of things, some cases have even led to people being married multiple times.

Lets not forget those that use fake images of people they found on the internet, or even those that were taken five, ten or even fifteen years ago, it’s amazing what a little work with Photoshop can achieve.  Imagine turning up to a date expecting to get a supermodel and finding a stubby pervert.

But there is another danger, and that is the danger of severe rejection. The thing with the Internet is that it makes people believe that they can punch above there weight. And I do not mean rude when I say this, but some people feel that because very attractive people are on the Internet and single that with there plain or less attractive looks they stand a chance. This is a very two sided coin, because people on the Internet dating sites are far more picky than they would be in the real world, you get a picture and that’s what you want, personality etc. often sits on the backburner its all about appearance. So those with beautiful looks would not even consider anyone less than beautiful, and those that are average looking always aim for beauty. Dating websites on some level have become the ultimate beauty contest leading some to make dramatic measures. It works the other way to, if you have a scale of 1-10 in looks, a 5 will seldom seriously consider messages from another 5. Whereas in the real world a 5 will often consider a 1 or 2 if the personality is right.  Sadly no matter how you try, without the bluntest form of humor personality never comes across on dating websites.

While Internet dating is a goldmine for those building and developing the websites, it can be heartbreaking for others. And if you want my advice, although it can take a lot longer stick to the real world where people matter first before all other factors. Whether it be relationships that start through friends, work, or even singles nights; nothing will ever replace the feelings you gain from a real person.
