The Dos and Don’ts of Good Relationships
Good relationships are our goal, but how do we help ensure their success?
For any relationship to survive there are some important points to take into consideration. Like everything else in life, if the relationship is worth it then you will have to work at it in order to give it the best possible chance of success.
Communication is the most important thing of all. Without communication you will not know what is really going on in your relationship. Get into the habit of sitting down together and sharing your day. This will encourage you both to share thoughts and feelings. When problems arise you will find it easier to talk them through if you are already used to chatting every day.
Compromise is also very important in maintaining and building your relationship. You want to do one thing and your partner wants to do something else, what do you do? Don’t fight about it. Talk it over and decide together to do one thing now and the second thing at a later but specified date. This way you both get what you want without the arguments.
Listening to each other is crucial. Don’t just sit there pretending to listen while you are secretly thinking about what you will wear tomorrow. Really hear what your partner is saying. Don’t interrupt just sit quietly and take in every word. This is very hard to do at first and will take quite a lot of practice, but the rewards are amazing.
Compliment each other. If your partner looks good or tries something new, be sure to let them know that you have noticed and offer constructive comments and critisicms. Do not put your partner down and if you feel you have to say something upsetting to them try to phrase it as gently and tactfully as possible. Imagine how you would feel if the situation was reversed.
Make sure you let your partner know how much you care for them every day and how much you appreciate them. You can do this in words or by doing things for them. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the most impact.
Encourage give and take in your relationship. It’s an equal partnership and both partners must be aware of this. Don’t let things slide. If you have a problem talk it out and be gentle but firm. Your needs must be met as well as your partner’s.
You may have noticed that the common theme throughout is good communication. This is the single most important aspect of a healthy, happy relationship. With good communication you can be sure that you are giving your relationship the best possible chance of success.
