Is true love still a reality or just something seen in “make believe” movies? In a world where the rule seems to be “every man for himself” it’s important to consider the characteristic of true love.
Anyone who has seen the award winning Titanic, would agree with me that it was a rare display of true love that was demonstrated by the two characters Rose and Jack acted by Kate Winslet and Leonard Decaprio respectively. What else could have made Rose to stay back in the ship with her lover, rejecting the offer of a rescue boat, or better still, what would you call the sacrificial gestures of the “hero” Jack who made sure that at the incident of ship wreckage, his companion was safely afloat while he was waist deep in that awfully freezing North Atlantic Ocean?
“Love is in the air”, “Money cannot buy love”, “If loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right” are just a few of the clichés often quoted each time the subject of love is discussed. There are so many who pay lip service to this phenomenon called love but very few people practise true love else the world would be a better place.
Characteristic of True Love
Self-sacrifice is the underlying element of true love. It implies forgetting about your self and seeking the benefit of the other person. Every evil in the world today is traceable to selfishness. Political leaders and those at the corridors of power – particularly in my own part of the world – want to store up wealth for themselves at the expense of the people they are called to represent. How absurd! Similarly, any relationship where there’s selfishness would collapse. Love, true love seeks for the highest good of the other man. It loves to give.
Are you in a relationship, or looking for true love? Then you might want to take a closer look at your self. Do you have true love to offer? It’s also imperative that you consider your spouse (or potential spouse) for this quality of selfless love which seeks the highest good of the other.
A popular musician in my country who goes by the name Tuface Idibia puts it this way in his song: “I’m looking for someone who will satisfy me, looking for someone who will love me for me, someone who will be my true love”. Well, I guess that makes two of us!
