Them in a Relationship
A six year olds view on relationships.
Thursday of last week my six year old son came home quite frazzled, it would seem one of his best buddies had turned to the dark side. The dark side where cooties, cuddles and kisses live; you guessed it GIRLS! He came in shaking his head telling me the story of how his buddy had been lured to side with a girl.
It would seem the little girl in question gave his friend markers. (insert gasping sound here). Upon receiving the markers and accepting them my son’s friend was informed he was now and forever more this girls boyfriend. Apparently when you are six markers is an ideal substitute for diamond rings.
My son seemed rather concerned about his friend, apparently he himself has not accepted any art mediums from the female gender in his class and is rather uncomfortable that his friend did. As his Mom I have to admit no matter how ridiculous it seems I’m really happy he isn’t accepting markers just yet.
My son explained the situation in these words, so please never mind my misspellings and grammar for a moment. ”She gave ‘em the markers to keep forever! Now them in a relationship and are gonna be boyfriend and girlfriend even after them get married.” This sums up what we adults need self help books, therapists and pricey divorces for. The next day my son came home and we asked how his friend was doing (snicker, snicker). My son looks somewhat tired when he states “He gived back the markers. Them done. No relationship now.” Well I have to say my household was a little saddened by this unexpected break, so we asked if the little girl was OK. ”Yea, she needed her markers to color a picture.”
When you think of all the emotional turmoil one goes through in a break up or even in getting together with someone it seems ridiculous to hear a six year old idea of a relationship revolving around markers. Of coarse my husband did mention that depending on if they were “the smelly kind” of markers that could definitely win someone over.
My only hope, other than my son waits a few years before accepting markers is that this doesn’t go to every mans head and females everywhere begin getting markers in lieu of anniversary flowers.
