To Have a Spouse that Saves Lives Affects Your Own 2

by Soph in Relationships, February 6, 2008

As the spouse of an emergency services worker, you might have to miss your wedding anniversary from time to time. Here’s how to prepare for that.

Spouses of emergency service workers know that they have to make sacrifices from time to time, just as their spouse has to. Here’s how to be prepared in case you need to cancel your wedding anniversary if an emergency comes up.

Stay Local

While an exotic trip to Tahiti may be just what the doctor ordered, it may not be what the fire fighter ordered. If your spouse will be on call during your wedding anniversary, then it would be best to stay local so that they can answer an emergency call and respond to it quickly. Lives are often involved and reaching the site of an emergency quickly could mean the difference between life and death.

Keep The Phone and Pager Switched On

There is a time and a place to keep a phone and a pager switched on and that would be when your spouse is on call and suspects that they might have to return to work at short notice. Despite the fact that this can cut into a romantic wedding anniversary celebration, having these devices switched off could result in serious consequences if no one is able to contact your spouse.

Order a Small Wedding Anniversary Cake

What difference does it make if you have a large or a small wedding anniversary cake? It will make a great deal of difference if your spouse has to rush off to an emergency situation and leaves you with a cumbersome sheet cake that could easily feed 30. If possible, just buy individual serving size cakes complete with a lid so that the cake can be put in the fridge to be eaten later. It is just a small detail that can make getting ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Leaving a restaurant in a rush with a large sheet cake in tow will not be easy, but a small sized cake can be fitted into a handbag or pocket to be eaten later.

Although it is unlikely that you will have to prepare for each wedding anniversary in this way, it is possible that you will have to cut at least one, if not more, of your wedding anniversaries short if you are married to someone who works for the emergency services. It is easy to become hurt and angry, but this will not solve anything. Your spouse will need your full support if you are called away to an emergency.
