Who Doesn’t Judge a Book by Its Cover?
This article takes a fun yet realistic look at how we do care about the looks of things and people, no matter how much we deny or try to avoid it.
Cover of The Ugly Truth [Blu-ray]
Seriously, who doesn’t? I am ready to argue with you if you answer “Me”. We are designed to judge books by its covers. We can talk go about this literally, metaphorically or in marketing terms but the result won’t change. I am not saying everyone is superficial. I am just merely pointing out to the fact that we are inclined to form a thought on the basis of appearance of anything. So what brought this argument on, then?
Recently I watched a stint on one my favorite comedy show that was spot-on. Here’s what happens:
A nerdy, frumpy-looking girl has a crush on one of her friends. The guy isn’t exactly hot, but as far as he and she are concerned, he is out of her league. When she hears that he is going to ask another girl out, she feels crushed. She sits cursing the superficiality of people and how much importance is placed on looks and how unfair is it.
Then a weird looking guy (he looks too much like a hippie from the 70s with the dress sense of a male pop star) comes in, and realizes she is crying. He consoles her by agreeing with her. The girl is happy that there is a guy who seems above all the crap. Then they both look at each other and see each other’s faces fort he first time. They both scream and part ways. What happened? They both didn’t like how the other one looked. Attraction is a funny thing and to say that we are above physical attraction and appearance, we would be lying. No, a guy doesn’t have to look like he has sprung from the cover of Men’s Health. And no, men do not always fall for models. But in addition to characteristics and all the layers we come to recognize and appreciate later, first sighting is about looks; just as Gerard Butler’s character Mike points out (in the movie The Ugly Truth): No one falls in love with your personality at first sight.”

This is hilarious! See what Triond did? It just judged the piece by its title and put it in a totally irrelevant category. This further proves my point;)

Haha, Zoey, I also notice that, this article ended in bookstove!
You are right, people tend to judge people by the appearance, that’s human nature. For me, I admit, but, it’s only a while, after that, how pretty or how handsome also useless if they are “selfish, hypocrite or arrogant”, I will still drag them to the “trash”, hee hee, i sound so mean…
Interesting article, Zoey, I enjoy reading.

very nice article. indeed, it is too pat to say looks doesn’t matter, but it is human nature to want/like beautiful things. it takes great courage to look beyond the surface.

Exactly. I agree with you both. If the cute looking guy turns out to be arrogant/selfish/cheating/mean…., he goes straight to thrash. But sometimes people do pretend to be more than they are not and it is really annoying to find out that you have been fooled.
But yeah, who doesn’t like pretty things?

I met a man who was so charming and good looking. Only to find out he was full of trash. Such a waste

I fully agree. I am not that pretty and oversized. Despite the fact many consider me nice, guys just don’t like me and I get rejected.

The bad thing is usually whenever we decide to look past the looks, fall for the personality, onlty to realize the person was only pretending to be nice. It sucks. Those times I wish I had been more superficial and had judged the book by its cover.
Martine, rejection comes to everyone. Sometimes it can even be by the fact that you just don’t play games. I hate that.

great article and thank you for being honest! I guess we are all shallow to some degree.

I can’t believe where Triond stuck this.
Great review. I am reminded of the movie “Mask” from the 80’s with Cher.

@ Videomark:Yep, Triond prove what I wrote. that is hilarious. Mask was painful to watch good movie. you should see the man without a face as well.

@ lilyrose: yep, we are all shallow to a degree but i just hope we meet more and more people who have deeper sides and are at least honest about human nature.

Great article, plenty to think about. Humans are funny beings. I admit, I initially started to read it because of it’s title, so good work there. I think we all have articles that have been placed in strange places, at least it increases our readership.

I don’t know if it increases it but I simply adored the irony
in this one. Thanks for commenting. I usually find it hard to find
the perfect title but this one kind of found itself.

Thought provoking. First impression counts.I guess that why we do need to put some effort in appearance. But in the end though, a book that sucks will never be on the bestseller’s list. Btw, it seems that blonde women are judged in an opposite way. Always nothing to do with the storyline.lol.

You are right, Sharif.. Blonde women are usually perceived as dumb and pretty, which is sad. First impression does count, sometimes more than we’d want it to.
