Why is Fame a Turn on with Women
From personal experience the writer asks, why do some women find a man with fame or notoriety a turn on?
What is it about fame that attracts women? I’m not just talking about A list male celebrities but men with any degree of fame.
Back in the early seventies I was a deejay, not your hot pop music station jock, but just a guy with his own sound system, travelling from gig to gig. I was reasonably famous in north Kent and south east London, famous enough for strangers to say hello to in the street, some even asking for my autograph, but I was a million light years away from making the premier division.
The thing that still baffles me to this day is that after each gig I was always approached by women, young, to not so young, teen aged to married, all giving me the come on, some even openly offering sexual favours, which incidentally, I never took up. I was possibly the world’s most reluctant love god!
What baffled me even more was that the promise of a trip to paradise came mainly from the married women.
What was the big attraction? I never made a secret of the fact that I was married with a couple of young children, so it couldn’t have been because I was young, free and single.
Did they think that I was ruggedly handsome? I doubt it, my name has never come up in the same sentence as Brad Pitt’s!
Did they think that I was fabulously wealthy? I doubt that too, they must have seen my old van parked outside!
Twenty years later, from time to time, I used to jam with a local pub band, playing a bit of guitar and helping out with the vocal harmonies, standing mostly at the back of the stage.
After the gigs, the same thing as a score or so years earlier was still happening, although now I was only famous in the local area.
By now, my fan base stretched to sixty-something year old women, some with husbands standing just a matter of feet away, still offering it to me on a plate, which again, hand on heart, on my baby’s eyesight guvnor, I turned down!
Stranger still, it’s not only showbiz types and sportsmen that are subject to this adulation, even high profile mass murderers get fan mail, with proposals of marriage delivered to them in prison.
So what is it with fame and women? Do they think that if they get tangled up with the famous, the fame will rub off on them?
Do they think it will give them some kind of kudos?
Does it make them ‘cool’ if they can say, “I’ve had him”?
Whatever the reason, at the time, I enjoyed it!
So it’s over to you ladies, why is fame or notoriety an aphrodisiac to some women?

I think it’s the – power – of the “rich” famous men and the – freedom – of the “not-so-rich” famous men is what attracts women in general. I do not think money is much in play especially when you (men) are daring enough to do what you want to do (freedom) and however you want it(power).
No, I’m not a feminist. I’m not a male chauvinist either.

Well, in my experience, which is probably about as long as yours, George, it’s all about ‘oomph!’

I think it is about the hope of spending a moment in time with someone who is more “interesting” than yourself. Often when people (not just women) feel rather ordinary, they look to ride the exciting coattails of someone else.

I believe it might all be in the way that the media plays that person out to be. I fall in love with actors on TV who are portrayed as extremely witty, wise but always kicks butte and saves the day. But if I really knew them, thsy might not be like that at all. They might be just the opposite in real life be hind the sceans
Interesting article.

I don’t have an answer for you either. Maybe these women are just lonely or trying to make their husbands and boyfriends jealous. I don’t think this applies to the majority of women…

They are bored with their husbands and think these folks are easier pickings than men they are aquainted with, and someone their husbands won’t suspect, besides it’s fun and exciting.

I think women tend to flock today because of the notoriety of being with someone who is famous or well known. and possibly for the money. We are in a recession. Everyone wants to be in show biz. Whether you admit or not, we would all love to be as known as Brad Pitt or Denzel Washington and have their money. And you ladies, BE HONEST! you gonna tell me that if you received an opportunity to be with either one of the gentlemen for even a date or coffee, you wouldn’t do it? Of course you would, just to say that you did. Great write George- jammin’ with a band huh? – God Bless – fan/friend- Princess

Thank you for your comments so far, ladies (and gentlemen), on my sociological experiment!
The general consensus of opinion at the moment seems to be that it’s the excitement rather than the money that appears to be the attraction.
I’m flattered to know that I may once have been thought of as exciting and it wasn’t my money they were after!
Oh how mistaken those ladies were way back then. What with holding down a responsible day job and gigging in the evening, my four hours in bed at night were reserved for sleep only.
By the end of the night my life had a job to crawl off of the slip road into the slow lane let alone the fast lane!
I may want to use these comments in a further article at some time, has anyone got an objection if I quoted theirs?
Another interesting point to come out of this is, that (so far) nobody has called me a male chauvinist or an egoist. Thank you for taking this article with some degree of seriousness.

Good article. You make me want to write a follow-up as to why women are attracted to fame. I have known of many groupies in my time and the subject still baffles me a bit.

Nay! It is NOT a turn on for ALL women–actually.. Shy, nerdy men, who make women laugh and are quite insecure about cute things about themselves ARE QUITE attractive actually. My bf has big ears..and is ADORABLE!! He laughs and scoops me up and pretends he is taking me away to play TARZAN!!….and money is NO OBJECT!!!SOME Men just need to be reassured…..pfffffffft!!!
….good grief!!
Well constructed article luv!!

Further information, Brad Pitt is not very handsome anyway.
My hubby often says like this,”Darling, how is me? Do I look like Brad Pitt”
Many times I answer his question like this,”No, Darling! You are handsomer than him.”

Fame is fleeting, and overrated I think, Basically it boils down to survivor instinct, the best, the brightest, but is not practical, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, a great article!! loved it

Hmmm, I never got the groupie concept either. Why would a famous man be appealing? Personally I’d never offer myself to anyone, not even Brad Pitt. I’m happy with my man.

Hey. I saw you comment on my best friend’s article so I came to check you out. Very nice article. I think it the thing about fame that attracts woman is the fact that they’ll have power and people looking up at you

I dont understand the groupie thing either. The appeal may be there, but they are people first, superstars last. But maybe not all wemon are attracted to that sort of lifestyle.I watched Rock Star with Jennifer Anison and Mark Walenburg -great movie about rock stars and groupies, but I would not be attracted to a fella due to the fact he was rich or famous..Give me an average good down to earth fella anyday.Maybe then I wouldnt have to worry how many other wemon he is playing “chess” with while on tour.

Debatable topic…I think it works both ways. Glamour and fame are hard to ignore – Mere mortals simply cannot be oblivious to the Oohs and Aahs that emancipate from masses of people around them.

I have to agree that it’s all about the excitement of being with someone who is doing something outside the every day. We want to live vicariously through them, if just for a while, even if we never have the guts to chose music or movies, etc. as a career. Also, we then gain the “status”, if you will, of being the one chosen by that individual.
And this works both ways. There are plenty of men out there who would love to be with a female singer, actor, model.
