Amish Study Religion in Their Homes

by maddenmaddog in Religion, June 16, 2009

This is a story about the Amish way of life.

The Amish is a group that believes in the Bible. Their goal is eternal life. While that is the same goal for other religions, the Amish believe they must be separate from the world in order to attain that goal. They don’t have churches, but meet every two weeks in homes.

The Amish break themselves into church districts. Each district varies, but most have about 30 families at the most. The district may be bordered by a road or other boundary.

A district has one bishop, two ministers and a deacon to each church district. They are chosen by lot. Each district may have one or several schools, depending on the number of children needing education.

Church service is held biweekly at the home or in the barn of one of the district’s members. The service will rotate from family to family.

Service lasts about three hours and some are held 9 a.m. to noon. After the service, lunch is served.

The men and women sit on different sides of the room. If the small children get antsy, they are given something to eat or play with.

All of the Amish are encouraged to attend unless their health is a problem.

The youth sometimes get together on Sunday evenings and sing German songs at the house church was held.
