Atheism for Morons
Used as a beginner’s guide to atheism for those who hold incorrect concepts about the more common ideas of atheism. This is not intended to reflect the ideas of the atheist community as a whole, though it reflects the general ideas of those that I know.
This is used as a basic guide to understanding atheism. I will used the more commonly accepted beliefs, i.e. big bang, evolution, lack of a creator, etc…
This is not intended to be a one and only guide, nor is it intended to stray anyone from their religion. It is merely intended to provide a basic understanding so that no atheist will even have to hear the “peanut monster” argument ever again. It goes like this.
“Atheism states that heat and matter create life. So, when I open a jar of peanut butter, I should see a peanut monster. But I don”t. So atheism is wrong.’
Other versions are longer, and replace “heat” with “light”, but you get the point. I will try to explain this without bashing any religion, though I cannot guarantee. If you are an overly sensitive creationist, it would be best for you to leave. I will not be held responsible for any overly concerned parents nagging their newly atheist thirteen year old, who doesn’t really get it, but wants to rebel anyway.
First, I will get a few things out of the way. I will start with Pascal’s wager. I’m too lazy to look on Wikipedia, so it goes something like this.
‘If I say that there is no god, and I am correct, then I am not hurt. But if I say that there is no god, and I am wrong, then I will go to hell forever. Therefore, it is better to believe in god.’
Pascal was assuming a few things. One; there the Christian god is the only possible god. Two; that the god rewards saying that one believes in god, even if they don’t. Three; that the god punishes those that don’t believe in(or worship) him. Four; that if there is a god, there can only be one.
Now, he is right on one thing. If there is a single god, who awards those who worship or say they believe in him without believing in him and punishes those who don’t no matter what they were like, then it is better to worship said god. Thing is, most gods who award worship or belief require you to actually BELIEVE in them. And some of us just can’t do that. Why? Because it makes no sense to us. If you believe that, then don’t bother praying for us. Your god gave us minds that demand reason and logic. And there is nothing logical that I can see. So blame your god for our eternal damnation and torture.

I agree. They have no logical reasoning skills, only faith. I remember arguing with my religion teacher in Catholic elementary school. My logical reasoning skills surpassed hers, so naturally I became Agnostic. If a grown up with a lifetime of religious knowledge has no reason to believe, then why should I assume there is any reason at all?
“If I say that there is no god, and I am correct …”
How about the other 2 possibilities:
If you say there IS a god and you are correct, than all is well, since you will enjoy the afterlife.
If you say there IS a god and you are incorrect, you devote your life to a deceitful church, thereby rewarding their deceit, thereby increasing their power monopoly over our minds, and destroy the only life that matters, not only for yourself, but the other victims of the scam. Hmm… has anyone heard of “The Dark Ages”?
The church in the dark ages was perhaps defeated by the printing press, so people could read the bible themselves (or something else related to communication and independence). The world got better since then, but is on a downward slope again; what will it take this time to rescue us?
