Atheism for Morons

Used as a beginner’s guide to atheism for those who hold incorrect concepts about the more common ideas of atheism. This is not intended to reflect the ideas of the atheist community as a whole, though it reflects the general ideas of those that I know.

Moving on. I will start with one of the more accepted theories of how life began. This is not supposed to be definitive, and is not to be taken as a certain answer.

Nucleic acids, when in close contact, react to a certain amount. When heat is added, the reaction ability increases. When you get roughly the heat of a lightning both, there is a very small chance that the nucleic acids can combine to form a strand of very primitive DNA, and very basic, very primitive life.

It is unknown exactly how many “false starts” life could have had. This is due to conditions, as well as variations in life when it began. It is also possible for new life to be created by lightning striking, though the odds are still rather small. There is no definitive answer, so that is merely intended to pad some space.

Next; Big bang. Certain creationists understand enough about the big bang, though many I know seem to be of the opinion that the universe as it is today popped out of nowhere with no reason. It would take too long for me to describe the time line or how it think it began, so try Wikipedia. Or anything else ending in “pedia”.

Lack of a creator. This is a biggie. Often, I am asked to prove that there is no god (they almost always mean the Judea-Christian god). I respond based on my mood. If I feel sarcastic, then I tell them to prove that Zeus, Hades, Ares, Apollo, and Hera don’t exist, and I will follow their example.

A few times it is pointed out too me that science does not know with exact precision what happened. I then point out that science advances its beliefs, therefore making it able to adapt, unlike scripture. This also means that what we do not know today, we may know tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the day after that. And so on.

As a word of warning; This is used to help creationists better understand atheism to prevent idiotic arguments, as several of my atheist friends actually want to argue with a creationist who knows what atheism actually is. Expect others to be more knowledgeable about this stuff. Buy a book, read up on it, THEN start arguing.

I agree. They have no logical reasoning skills, only faith. I remember arguing with my religion teacher in Catholic elementary school. My logical reasoning skills surpassed hers, so naturally I became Agnostic. If a grown up with a lifetime of religious knowledge has no reason to believe, then why should I assume there is any reason at all?

“If I say that there is no god, and I am correct …”

How about the other 2 possibilities:
If you say there IS a god and you are correct, than all is well, since you will enjoy the afterlife.

If you say there IS a god and you are incorrect, you devote your life to a deceitful church, thereby rewarding their deceit, thereby increasing their power monopoly over our minds, and destroy the only life that matters, not only for yourself, but the other victims of the scam. Hmm… has anyone heard of “The Dark Ages”?

The church in the dark ages was perhaps defeated by the printing press, so people could read the bible themselves (or something else related to communication and independence). The world got better since then, but is on a downward slope again; what will it take this time to rescue us?
