From One Skeptic to Another: 10 New Age Ideas That Might be Worth Considering

This article explores 10 New Age ideas that I have found to be worth looking into at some depth. Nevertheless, I have remained a devout skeptic about all things New Age. The Truth I live by is that you must find truth that resonates for you—not what someone has told you is true, what you read in a book about what is true, what you were taught is true, or what a religion says is true. Personal experience is the only way to authentic spirituality.

Two: You must be conscious of your positive and negative thoughts and continually monitor your thoughts, choosing to transform the negative. New Agers believe that the core emotions we experience are the polar opposites of love and fear; these emotions are the foundation of our human experience. To find peace and harmony in your life, you should seek to act from the space of love. This emphasis on optimism is at the heart of New Age thought.

Three: God is the foundation of your being—there is no separation between you and God. God is not an anthromorphized entity, who is jealous, angry, and judgmental. Rather, God is simply divine love and pure acceptance. And this essence of God is who and what you are and every person is.

Four: You need not go searching outside yourself for God. Simply turn inside and value your intuition, your individual knowing, and your personal path to God.

Five: Your will and God’s will are the same. In order to live in accordance with God’s plan, follow your bliss, follow what brings joy to your heart, and what allows you to experience the best in yourself and others.

Six: Honor the divinity in each person. This divinity is often buried; however, it is always there. Do not judge another person, for you do not fully understand their path or what they are seeking to accomplish.

Seven: All sin is a value judgment and subjective. God does not judge one way or another. However, this does not mean there are no consequences for actions. The world is based on the laws of cause and effect. If you steal from someone, there will be repercussions of some form or another. We’re all on Earth to experience our true nature, so living out of accordance with that is what produces negative consequences. In other words, your hell will be here and now, but not in a way that inflicts punishment because you were bad, but only in a way that reminds you to realign yourself with your true nature. You can choose to experience yourself differently at any time.

Eight: In order to heal yourself, heal your heart, heal the emptiness inside yourself, give what you don’t have away. So if you don’t have love in your life, love another. If you feel judged by another, do not judge. If you are anxious, help make another person’s life more peaceful. By giving without the expectation of receiving, you will bring what you desire into your life.

Nine: Live without expectation. Relinquish all desire and wanting. This at first seems contradictory because how can we achieve what we desire if we give up attachment to it? This is the great paradox, indeed. Yet by giving up expectation we allow ourselves to see the blessing and opportunity in every circumstance though they may not look like we expected, wanted, or desired them to. This is the ultimate “glass half full” perception.

Ten: The purpose of life is to experience joy, which is who and what you truly are. Joy is the highest expression of who you truly are. Everything else pales in comparison and is ultimately meaningless.

The ninth idea is actually a buddhist idea but thats not surprising seeing as most new age teachings are just age old eastern philosophy watered down for western audiences. If these ideas really intrigue you I would recommend trying to find some english translations of some taoist, hindu or buddhist reading material.

Great article again WriteEditSeek. The more of you I read, the more fascinated I become.
I think my favourite new age concept is a mix between number two and seven. I can’t remember where I read it or who described it to me, but it’s along these lines:

Every action you perform, every thought in your head, produces energy. This energy builds up around you in an aura. Negative thoughts and actions produce negative energy, and the opposite is also true. The type of energy you surround yourself with with directly affect the type of energy that is attracted to you. Unlike most things, like attracts like. Positive to positive, negative to negative. Basically, if you think positive thoughts and perform positive actions, good things will happen to you.

    Great article!

“Personal experience is the only way to authentic spirituality.”

I couldn’t agree more strongly if I tried! It makes life much harder, though – I often wish I was someone who could just accept someone elses version of the truth…
