It’s the End of the World as we Know It
Does the Mayan calendar predict that the world will end on December 21, 2012?
When I was in elementary school in the 1950s, I remember a couple of boys talking about the end of the world. “The world’s going to end in 2000,” said one. I asked one how he knew this and he replied,”My preacher told us.” Please notice that it is 2009 as I write this and we are still here. I never knew where his preacher got this information. I guess it was his interpretation of the Bible. This information effected me all my life.
Even then, I had great plans. I was going to be an astronomer and a spaceman (the word “astronaut” had not been invented yet). However, the probability that I would not live past the age of fifty certainly put a damper on that. But as the year 2000 came and went, I felt better. What I want you to remember is this: Jesus Christ said that even He did not know when the world would end. He also said to beware of false prophets.
People are always saying that the end is here. The latest involves the Mayan calendar, which we are told ends on December 21, 2012, which is therefore the day the world ends. However, this calendar may actually be a countdown to a new beginning. The Mayans believed their calendar described seven ages and Man would be reunited with God at the end of the sixth age. December 21, 2012 begins the sixth age.
Many researchers believe that the 2012 date is the beginning of a time when we rethink our way of life and how we relate to one another. Several other religions predict that on this date great changes will occur and a new age will begin. While a comet or asteroid could collide with Earth on December 21, 2012, it is just as likely that something good could happen.
What I would suggest is that you make your peace with God. If you are a Christian and follow the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, then you are good to go. Treat people as you would have them treat you. Jesus is a great role model – live your life in a Godly manner. The Holy Bible is the ultimate self-improvement guide. Use it as your guide and you will be ready for whatever comes your way.

There have been many people to try to set a date for Jesus’ return to earth. And they have all been wrong! There was a man that wrote a book telling why he thought the world would end in 1988. He was wrong, but couldn’t face it, so wrote another one saying he miscalculated and it was to be 1989. Again he was wrong. Reading Revelations will tell us what has to come to pass before the return of Jesus. Many generations have said that they thought that the return of Jesus could be any time. But Jesus gave us signs of His coming to watch for. And the prophecies have to be fulfilled before He does. Never before has one generation had so many signs that have been fulfilled in their lifetime as the present generation. We have seen Israel return to their homeland and become a nation once more. We have other things that are coming to pass in our time, as mentioned in Matthew chapter 24.
