Learning to Govern From Nature
The laws of the physical universe can be a model for laws governing society.
Although tragic, we must face the reality that we are coming detached from our constitutional heritage. Our departure from constitutional rule is a result of the base forces of our fallen nature overcoming the checks and balances designed by our founders to limit the continual striving of vice. In such a climate, the need to establish connection to another anchor becomes vital.
There is no better model than the example of God’s governance of the universe. The most important feature of that governance is stability. What could be more predictable than the course of the planets and the continual march of the seasons? It is a beautiful code of law, that governs chemistry and the physical life of plants and animals, that has been given to us. It is this atmosphere of virtual permanence that has allowed us to march confidently forward, advancing in knowledge.
Consider for a moment the great handicap we would suffer if even one of the laws that govern the universe were subject to change at any time. Suppose we did not know from year to year if there would be a growing season.
Laws governing society should be modeled after the laws of the universe. They should be few, simple and not easily changed.
