Monkey Art – an Interpretation

Swasian Creation presents an art piece inspired by a cultural upbringing.

Jade Happy Buddha and No Sin Monkeys

Kamon – ’05-‘06

Drawn with pencil on paper – traced over with pen – digitally colored in photoshop.

This image is a reminder of my roots. The flames in the background represent the heat of being born and bred in the southwest. Being a summer baby, heat is with me no matter where I go. The swirled designs within the flame are my representation of traditional Asian art mixed with art of the Southwest U.S. Here in the Southwest the arts are greatly influenced by our local Native American tribes as well as the Mexican culture. The colors used in the flames are like those of our summer desert sunsets and of beach sunrises in Thailand.

The Buddha and monkeys are symbolic to how I live. Ever since I could remember monkeys have been my favorite animal. As I got older I found out I was born the year of the monkey according to the Chinese calendar.  Even though it is impossible to always hear, speak or see no evil, I use it as a guide in my decision making. I have always favored the fat happy Buddha. To me it is symbolic by showing you can still be happy even if you are not up to “society’s” standards. The life of Buddha is lead by meager means. You are grateful for the good that happens to you whether small or big. You help those in need within your means and expect nothing in return. The color green represents for me things of good nature.
