Esther 4–7

Prediction for Haman

“Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shall surely fall before him.” (Esther 6:13)

Haman was a very wicked man. He had devised a plan to kill the Jews which the king had approved. But events are now turning against Haman after Esther’s banquet with the king and Haman, and Haman relates the turn of events to his wife and his counsellors (“wise men”). After hearing Haman’s report, they make a prediction of his downfall which indeed came to pass. We note the wisdom in the prediction, the warning in the prediction.

Wisdom in the prediction. This prediction of Haman’s downfall was a very wise prediction. It is supported by both heaven (the Scriptures) and history. First, heaven predicts that those who mistreat the Jews will be cursed. “I . . . will curse him that curseth thee [the Jews]” (Genesis 12:3). Second, history also supports the prediction. It was history that caused Haman’s people to make their prediction. They did not have the Scriptures but “the revival of the Jewish people since the times of Cyrus was sufficient to induce, in the minds of the heathen who were attentive to the signs of the times, a persuasion that this nation enjoyed divine protection” (Keil). The world can learn from history, as well as the Scriptures, that the Jews are going to survive and have victory over their enemies. But unfortunately the world does not pay much attention to either history or the Scriptures.

Warning in the prediction. “Thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.” This prediction about Haman’s downfall is a warning to every persecutor of the Jews. The prediction says that if you persecute the Jews, you will bring judgment upon yourself. No people or nation will escape the prediction of condemnation for those who mistreat the Jews. God’s decree (Genesis 12:3), which we noted above, is an irrevocable decree that you ignore to your destruction. Hitler and others illustrate this fact well.
