Religious Bus Battles in UK Intensify:”Christians” Miss Point
So, in this current economic recession in which ordinary people are struggling to survive what would Jesus do? If Jesus were given a Visa would he: a) Spend £35,000 on retaliatory bus advertisements that may not inform people of his character or existence; or b) allot some money to those who need to buy food?
There’s no such thing as bad publicity. Right? Well, you be the judge of that.
Apparently some ‘Christian’ groups have shelled out £35,000 to wage a bus war against atheists who early this year asserted on bus adverts that “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”
The atheist were responding to posters on public transport that “threaten eternal damnation” to those who choose not to believe. (Sounds like the conflict in the Middle East to me).
So, for the sake of argument, let’s play what would Jesus do?
I dont presume to occupy a corner in the thought of Jesus Christ but I do know a little bit about behavior that is attributed to him in the Bible.
So, in this current economic recession in which ordinary people are struggling to survive what would Jesus do?
If Jesus were given a MasterCard would he: a) Spend £35,000 on retaliatory bus advertisements that may or may not actually inform people of his character or existence; or b) allot some money to those who need to go to Tesco to get some food; stop by Boots and get some medicine to heal the sick, and help those who can’t pay their rent, electricity bills and the like.
Advertisements are useful to sell society-approved ideas that support conspicuous consumption. They are not, on the other hand, very useful in persuading someone to change their religious beliefs. This is just fueling the fire. In the Telegraph it is reported that a TV producer from Russia is footing the bill for adverts on 25 London buses in March that will display a photograph of a monastery, proclaiming, “There is God. Don’t Worry. Enjoy your life!”
When and where does this tit-for-tat end? No one really knows. But I can suspect that it will not end with an abundance of theists.
