The Meaning of Life

by Michael Livingstone in Religion, June 30, 2009

A jaunt through the possibilities of why we’re here.

I suppose the title says it all, at least to you, the reader. However, you shouldn’t be mistaken at the fallacies one can interpret from it. Ahead are but rational philosophies on our purpose on Earth. They are not to offend, nor to encourage ideologies, but simply statements of what is possible. Hence, I have written this as but “verbal fluff”, a coalescence of what I think and what is fathomable.  Enjoy.

What is the meaning of life? Why are we here? What is our purpose? These are the three essential questions that would begin ones search for such things. The truth is, man cannot truly know what the meaning of life was until after life has ended, when we face our Creator in the afterlife, at which time the point is moot. Therefore, I have thought long and hard and summarized several possibilities, in order of feasibility, as to why we have been placed upon our terrestrial realm.

For the Sake of God

Perhaps the meaning of life is to find out more about God and his wonders and to garner an appreciation for them before your time is up. That is, we should learn of and praise the word of God and try to model ourselves after him and live in a just and true way. Note: Personally, I believe in this idea; however, I have honestly shown all in an unbiased manner.

To Attain as Much as Possible

There is little to explain here. Simply, one ascertains that they need to control as much as they can in their lifetime, to become as successful as possible, to gain as much as they can. However, it appears this ideology can become flawed, as though sometimes such action is in the interest of others such as your family and for the greater good, it can be too often an incentive to rampant greed an insensitivity to others needs.

To Enjoy Yourself

In this scenario, the meaning of life is to make the most of your short time on Earth. You should, according to this philosophy, enjoy life to the maximum. This appeals to the average person; however, after some time, one may question if this leads to vices and living for pleasure, rather than for more moral or feasible things.

There is No Meaning

Essentially, to accept this is saying “I don’t really know why I’m here.” Many have made this assumption based on the inability to find a rational meaning to life. All you are stating by believing this is that you simply don’t understand why you’ve been put here.

Various Religions

Now, I won’t get into this, but basically, what this means is you believe the principles of the meaning of life according to your respective religion. This naturally would tie in to Part I.; however, certain religions may differ exactly on the issue.

That was but a simple treatise on the possibilities of the meaning of life. I am totally unsure as to the unknown intentions of life as put forward by science and the mysterious but beneficent nature of God; my sole ambition for writing this short piece is to wonder aloud the possibilities. Thank you for your time.
