Why Am I an Atheist?

by MyOverflow in Religion, June 25, 2008

Why I, and many other atheists, are atheist.

I’m an atheist because of my lack of belief in any supernatural being; I lack belief because there’s no proof.

I study biology, chemistry, and cosmology. I look into my life and see the evolutionary process. My changes so small and insignificant, but, in the future, may be powerful. I look into life itself and see chemistry. I see how everything is formed, and how beautiful life is, being built by billions upon billions of atoms. I look at the earth and see Cosmology, I see a rock floating in space, holding an abundance of life. I look at the Universe, and I see life; the life of the sparkling stars above and the life of every human being that I love and hold dearly; for we are all but a speck in the grand stage of the Universe, of Life.

Why should there be an overseer who cares about what you do? Why should there be an omnipotent being who created us then CARES about worship? What kind of small God is that? I believe that, if there is any God, that God would be looking at everything, and not just Earth. However, no proof has been found, so no belief am I to have for such a being.

If I were to tell you that I was the richest man on the planet, you’d tell me to prove it. If I told you that I had created a cure for cancer or AIDS, you’d tell me to prove it. But you tell me that a creator created this entire Universe for just the planet Earth (in only 6 days 6000 years ago, even), and I’m shunned for asking for proof?

That’s why I’m an atheist. I am not a consumer in the market of dogma. I am not arrogant enough to say that my life is important to a God (or Gods). I believe that I am a part of the giant Universe, not excluded from it.

In conclusion: What do you think? Do you believe that I am a “God-hating atheist” (doesn’t make sense; how can I hate that which I do not believe exists)? Do you believe that I am a Satan worshiper (again, doesn’t make sense)? Do you believe that I’m not “American enough”?

“The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma.” – Abraham Lincoln

Sciences or Cosmology can answer only the HOW of a question. These can never answer WHY of questions. Sciences are studying only about the creation but intentionally ignoring the Creator. Has anybody ever proved that God does not exist? The non-existence of proof of existence of God (or anything), is not a proof of nonexistence of God. Since God exist therefore there can never be any proof of His nonexistence. You are advised to read the book ‘God & self-Realization’(Scientific & Spiritual View), by Dharam Vir Mangla before writing anything further.

    Overflow,
If you want proof of god existence, look in the mirror. What is staring back at you is god’s existence. We are created in god’s image. Everything on this earth and earth included, has a creator, and for that reason, we have a creator, and that creator is god!

I wish you were “arrogant enough”; the only thing I know to say is how dear you are to God . . . I think that’s why you wrote this. I think if He wants me (as a Christian) to give you any thoughts, any feedback, it’s simply how much He loves you. Faith can’t be proven, as with many other abstracts, but relationships are real; they are known by their love, which takes time to build.

Whatever Gods there be…let them come down in the here and now to speak for themselves. If Gods there be, they can speak. A continuous absence is a kind of evidence in and of itself. But let all Gods speak for themselves. I won’t let you stand in their place and neither will your book with the wordy look!
