Women in Hinduism
Hindu women are still struggling for their rights.
Many people are aware of discrimination women face around the world. All major religions contribute to this cycle, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, all have bias against women. The only difference is that in some it is more pronounced than the other.
Hinduism has long tradition of celebrating goddess’s who symbolize strength, knowledge and wealth. Yet the same religion and culture, for centuries, preached that women are feeble beings who should be controlled. Manu Smiriti, which is regarded as foundation of Hindu cultural life, advocates child marriage and denying women freedom to marry after their husband has died. It also preaches “wife burning”, a horrid practice where wife is burnt alive in her husband’s funeral pyre.
Although nowadays practice of wife burning seldom happens, child marriage is still a reality in many remote villages in India and Nepal. Widows remain at the mercy of their family and re-marriage is a rarity.
My grandmother was married by the time she was 6, to a person she didn’t know and had never met. Think about it, being married at 6! No education, no time to dream about a future, a life time of responsibility and constraints.
It is true that Hindu women have come a long way since then but the fundamental belief of the community remains the same. People regard daughters as unwanted burden, which acts as a fuel to growing problem of female infanticide, women still have very little decision making capacity and they are expected to confirm to the draconian standards set by the elders.
This cycle of discrimination and seclusion will continue unless Hindu women stand up and refuse to accept the bias in religious texts and demand their rightful position in the community.

Obviously you know nothing about your own religion! Manu Smriti is not considered basis of cultural life, nor does it advocate Sati. You are a typical Western-born Indian who is clueless about his/her cultural heritage.
Shame on you for writing such a misleading article. Sanantana Dharma, Hinduism, is the fountain of life.

@Ankur
Seems like you are also clueless about Manusmriti. Go get a copy of Manusmriti and read it dude. Laws of Manu – published by penguin books or so.

I agree with you. In India women were discriminated in the past and unfortunately it is still happening. In families husbands harass their wives. Thank you for pointing out this . one by one we need to stand up.

dear friends do you know what manu told and made the women. Women is not supposed to study, not supposed to treat equally, even not supposed have the decision making, all the things said by MANU. Do you think that women is an object, doesn’t she possess any right to think, behave, act to the environment. Hinduism is fountain of life, In what way it is? is it by the encouraging the Incest relationship(father and daughter sex mating) where the RAMA is the avatar of vishnu marries SITA where she is his daughter(SITA is daughter of EARTH-vishnu’s wife). dou you think that the good relationship is not applicable to your god. the mythology of hindu religion is to encourage, illegal and brutal relationship between father and daughter, brother and sister. Is this the fountain you want to induce in the society. Refer to Rig-veda, Brahmananda kavyam,all the vedas says the Incest happen between the so called Krishna and subhadra, Balarama.if you wanna know more, first you learn Sanskrit and go through Vedas in whatever context you want. And then if you dare to follow the so called HINDUISM is FOUNTAIN of LIFE, its your wish.
