One may escape the pitfalls of dopamine spikes, and disturbances in the hormonal equillibrium by abstaining from ejaculation. However this calls for a new set of problems such as retrograde ejaculation. The same does not occur if one abstains totally from masturbation.

To the arguement of the biological purpose of masturbation: Sex may be encouraged biologically, but it does not suggest masturbation itself is ‘natural’. Instead, it was intended to encourage people to procreate. You do not procreate when masturbating. In fact, there is no actual function of masturbation at all. I’ll elaborate:

First you must ask what practical purpose the act of masturbating actually serves.

Purpose 1: A stress reliever?

A weak resort, as there are a plethora of healthier stress relief activities out there, and with far less repercussions than frequent masturbation.

Purpose 2: Fends off prostate cancer?

A reasonable intention; too bad it is not fact. A few studies claim that frequent indulgence in sex/masturbating lowers risk, but no conclusive evidence as of yet. Other studies say it has no effect.

Purpose 3: Improves immune system?

I am not sure where this one came from. What evidence is there that masturbating boosts one’s immune system? If anything, due to the hormonal changes that come with it, one may be more succeptible to common colds and such. This is just my opinion, though.

Purpose 4: Lowers depression?

If anything, it raises the mood temporarily, albeit for a very short time. Once the dopamine spikes, it drops, leaving the masturbator back where he/she started, potentially feeling worse than before.

In reality, masturbation holds one back from experiencing positive things that will better us.
