Gender Awareness in Schools

Schools are teaching children gender awareness. When I say gender awareness I am referring to those who are boys and girls in the traditional sense and those who may be gay or lesbian.
The reason the schools state they started this teaching was due to bullying and harassment that those kids who were transgender were undergoing from the other students leading to serious injury and sometimes even death.

These classes are sometimes started as early as possible in grade school. Teaching we have boys, girls and kids. The teachers stay alert for any possible transgender students and try to accommodate them, and may even refer to them as he even tho they may physically be a she. And vice versa.

Who should be teaching these children gender awareness? Is it an effort that takes both the teachers and parents to develop children to be gender neutral and acceptable to those that may be gay or lesbian? Is is just the parents or just the teachers? Should this be taught at all?
