There are a lot of myths about masturbation that have been instilled into most people from the time they were children. These myths can cause young people to feel ashamed for doing something that comes naturally.

Myth: Only males masturbate. If a female does it, there is something wrong with her.

Fact: It is just as normal for girls to do it as guys. Statistics say that males do masturbate more than females, though the actual numbers may be closer, as females are likely to underreport their masturbation habits do to social stigma.

Myth: Masturbation causes blindness, hairy palms, acne, or other physical problems.

Fact: These are all myths created to scare young people away from masturbating.

Myth: It will cause sexual problems when you have sex with a partner.

Fact: Masturbation may cause sexual problems, but only if you over do it. If you are choosing to masturbate instead of having sex with your partner, it will most likely lead to relationship problems. Excessive use of pornography can also cause sexual problems if you expect sex to be exactly how it is portrayed in adult videos. Masturbation, however, can be beneficial in that it allows you to get to know your body and figure out what you like sexually before you actually have sex with a partner. This will allow you to be more comfortable with your body and to be more open sexually.

Myth: Masturbation can lead to infertility.

Fact: This is another myth created to scare young people.

Myth: You can get STDs from masturbating.

Fact: This myth doesn’t even make sense. If you don’t already have an STD, you can’t give one to yourself. The disease/virus has to come from somewhere!

Myth: Only young people masturbate.

Fact: People of all ages masturbate. In fact, a lot of females don’t even start until they are in their 20s.

Myth: Only single people masturbate.

Fact: A lot of people still masturbate even when they are in a relationship and are having sex regularly. It can help both partners to learn what they like or don’t like sexually so that they can more easily communicate their needs with their partner. It can also help reduce problems if one partner has a higher sex drive than the other.
