Sex Education

This is my interpretation of why I think sex education is so important, especially in today’s society.

It has always been my belief the better educated you are about something, the better chance you have of making a positive, well-informed decision.  This is an important point to make, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like sex education.  It has been shown over time that the individual who is properly educated is more likely to make decisions that will benefit them directly and/or decrease the chance of making a poor, life altering mistake.  The importance of accurate information is vital as well.

When it comes to the topic of sex education, it is safe to say that overall any information is generally going to be aimed at today’s youth.  For this very reason, I believe very strongly in informing teens of the possible consequences, either good or bad, that come from making the decision to partake in sexual activity.

It is safe to assume that, more likely than not, we, as informed adults, are not going to be able to get teens to abstain from sex.  So, we need to make sure that they have all the necessary information.  This starts with enforcing the possibility of contracting and/or spreading sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or females getting pregnant before they are ready.  Education is the best way to prevent this from happening.

So many young individuals make the decision to start having sex before they are mature enough to understand the responsibilities and consequences that come from doing so.  If they were to understand that sex is something that should not be entered into lightly, then maybe they would think twice before starting.  Many young men and women are not ready for the emotional side and often are not equipped with the best coping skills to deal with situations that turn out negatively.  This is another major issue that comes along with doing something that they are not prepared to handle.  With the likelihood of immaturity comes the risk of promiscuous behavior, one that reaps serious negative consequences.  Those who choose to have multiple partners run the risk of infecting themselves and/or others with STDs.  This comes with the lack of knowledge of practicing safe sex.
