Sex: Not Only for The Fortunate

Helping a worthy cause.

I have noticed that lately, I find myself defending people, especially women, from impoverished societies a lot more than I should, particularly to persons who you would just expect to know better.   I found myself in an argument with a young lady a few days ago, whom I have known pretty well and whom I perceived to be intelligent enough not to let the stupid things that come to your mind come out through your mouth.  Apparently not all young ones were taught by their parents that “if you have nothing nice to say, just say nothing.”  We were watching one of those “help a hungry child” advertisements and she proceeded to voice the opinion that since these ladies were poor and could not afford to feed the handful of children that they already had, they should not be making more.

This argument got me thinking and asking the question “Why is it that those of us in the western, more developed parts of the globe feel it right to criticize these young women for continuing to make children amidst their state of poverty?” Don’t get me wrong! I am absolutely against bringing children into this world and not being able to give them the basic necessities in the likes of food, clothing, shelter and in particular health care but I am also one who understands that not because you’re poor and hungry means you’re not going to be horny.  Let’s face it! All women around the globe, no matter what nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation or such enjoy the occasional orgasm or at least the pleasure of trying to reach one.  Let us bear in mind also, that these ladies in impoverished societies, be it Africa, India, the US, Europe or right here in the West Indies, unlike us in the more fortunate parts of the world or our respective regions, hardly know what it is to have running water and a flushing toilet, so do we really expect them to think of birth control and the likes? Why instead of criticizing don’t we go on an aggressive campaign to educate these ladies about birth control while we try to aid them with the young ones that they are already responsible for.  There are some pretty cheap birth control medications on the market which work really well.  Let us not just run around throwing condoms and expecting people to know what to do or how to use them.  Maybe we can get together and start a campaign to source such medication and distribute around parts of our regions where we think they are needed.  Then and only then do I believe that we would have a say as to what these ladies should and should not try because then we would have tried to help them.  Let us those of us  reading this look within ourselves and try and help the cause rather than just sitting on the sidelines and criticizing it.

I agree about criticizing others. All our circumstances are different. People tend to judge, point fingers but have no clue what the person or persons have gone or are going through. Like the writer rightfully said, only after you have given them a solution can you correct them.

I don\’t think we should look at those women as the ones with the problem. They may be ignorant of the facts of life. If you look at it closely we are more to be blamed than they are as we are the educated ones and the ones with all the knowledge and we sit and watch them suffer day to day and do nothing about it but throw our mean comments at them and looking down on them like they should know better. Apparently they don\’t, and so we can initiate an effort to educate them and provide them with the necessary tools to mitigate the problem while they can still get the pleasures that life has showered upon us all.
