The Unfaithful Hormones
It is a new fad these days to attribute all personal weakness to some scientific cause hence not getting the blame on oneself. Hormones are now the latest victim of this human approach.
And now there is someone to blame for faithful behaviour also, ‘THE HORMONES’. Hormones are getting a lot of battering these days and are now being blamed for all of the negative behaviours in human beings. Just recently science was arguing that homosexuality is not a negative trait. They are the ‘hormones’ that are responsible and now also for the unfaithful behaviour of women.
Science says women with high levels of sex hormone, Oestradiol, are more likely to have affairs and be unfaithful. Such women tend to be less satisfied with their lovers/ partners and more likely to have a roving eye. Dr Katrina, psychologist from UK, says that attractive women may not only have more alternatives but also high standards that are difficult to satisfy. Accordingly, such women may have fewer reasons to remain committed to any partner if higher quality potential mates are available.
Steadily, as scientific advancements get more sophisticated, all antisocial behaviour may be attributed to hormones. And because hormones are classified as a biological reason, hence there should be no punishment for any of hormone related human behaviour. Is it really the case that hormones are responsible? Let’s analyze.
Once upon a time, when scientific knowledge was not advanced, a homosexual interaction was considered a sin, evil and antisocial, a punishable act. Society, in general, condemned it and homosexuals opted to remain anonymous. Similarly, being faithful was deemed as the most important aspect of a successful love partnership, a marriage. It used to be that everything in a relation was forgivable but not unfaithfulness.
But do we, now, have a reason to be unfaithful, and homosexual? HORMONES?
Science has long been advocating that sex is more related to the mind and less to the physique. To explain in simple terms, let’s take the example of a blind and deaf man. Normally, he will not feel sexual, until he is made aware of, even if there are a dozen women standing in front of him, naked, groaning and performing all sorts of erotic acts, the reason being that his mind is not receptive to these sexual stimuli.
Now let’s restore the hearing sense of that same man. As soon as he starts hearing their groans, he will start feeling sexual because the mind is triggering something inside him, producing hormones, to respond to these sexual voices and he may start desiring to see the source of these voices.
Now let’s restore his vision also. As soon as he spots naked women in front of him, his desires attain their peak levels and he will soon want to copulate. During all this process the women have neither touched him nor invited him to have sex yet the man is now full of lustful desires. Visual stimulus is a powerful trigger because it impacts the mind more passionately, hence production of related hormones.
What is the reason for this? Is mind (thoughts) not controlling his sexuality? Why do doctors all over the world say that sexual performance is less related to the physical abilities and more to the mental and sexual dysfunctions have strong roots in the mind, the psychological ones?
Similarly other hormones are also a byproduct of related thought processes going on in the mind. Talk about the hormone ‘Epinephrine’ also called as adrenaline. Its presence in the blood in high quantities rapidly prepare the body to respond to emergency situations that may just be a mere threatening mental perception.
Science says adrenaline synthesis is solely under the control of the central nervous system and that several levels of regulation dominate its synthesis.
Yes, there might be hormonal imbalances in the blood of unfaithful women but the unfaithfulness is necessarily not a product of this hormone being in excessive quantity. A woman knows when she is attractive and then she is also aware of her ability to recruit higher-quality potential mates.
There is more rationale that the unfaithful thoughts in her mind trigger the brain to produce this hormone, oestradiol, in excess quantities. I recommend that science tests its theory from this angle to arrive at the right conclusion, and not mere give a ‘biological excuse’ to the unfaithful.
