Cancun Underwater Sculpture Museum
Jason deCaires Taylor brought new senses and a new depth to his sculptures when he exposed them under the sea. The artist fills up his time with divings and created the project “The Silent Evolution”, an amazing art where things made by human hands interact with the underwater world.
On the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, exactly near the mexican stations Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc was built the largest underwater museum where are exposed over 400 statues in natural size of the British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor , as part of a major artwork called “The Silent Evolution“.

It all covers more than 4,520 square feet.

The museum was inaugurated in November last year in the National Marine Park of the Yutacan Peninsula. The style is realist so those that will visit his works will be able to admire among others a nud female , a pregnant woman, an old man and a child with his look towards the water surface.

The entire ensemble creates a new artificial reef, his incorporation in the undersea environment being the purpose of Roberto Diaz, the President of the Undersea Art Museum.

Corals, sea sponges and other creatures will gradually cover the whole museum and will contribute to the silent evolutions of its shapes.

For deCaires Taylor is not a premiere, he already has some of his works in front of La Grenade Island and also on a English river.

His statues were made with a special cement with fiber glass, the costs reaching $250.000. The predictions indicate a number of 750.000 visitors every year.

Jason deCaires Taylor
His way of art can be considered as a colaboration with mother nature sending pieces of a special material on the undersea sand.

The sculptures never look the same because everything depends on the day light.
