How Children Learn Language

Children have some types of learning language. they are copying, completing, commenting, and reinforcing. All types are very important. parents must know these types of children language learning.

How children learn language

Everyone was equipped with biological organ to acquire language. This biological organ is called language acquisition device (LAD). LAD receives data or information, stores the data, analyzes the morphology, syntaxes, and phonology. Children brain received all the data from two main resources. They are visual and verbal organs.

Children have started acquiring language since they are 0,0 month old. Before children have perfect articulation organs they keep all language models that they receive from their parents and social environments as inner speech. They can no speak until they can use they articulation system to speak or turn their internal speech into external speech. Even though children have not had perfect organs, learning process continues. They use some strategy to learn language. The strategies are copying, commenting, completing, reinforcing.

Copying is one of learning strategies for children. Children imitate their parents or caregivers dialogues, accents, and language styles. Having dialogues will help children learn to stimulate language acquisition device ( LAD). Parents have to give simple and easy questions to make dialogues with their young kids. Questions like “ What is this”Is that a cat?”  are very important to stimulate their skill and understanding. What children can say “ this?”  with raising intonation, it means that they have acquired language. Word “ this?” has syntax. That is “ What is this? “. Even though children can only say one word, the word contains a full sentence. A word represents a sentence.

The second is completing. Children often say incomplete sentences. They sometimes say “ milk’ then parents have to complete the word milk with “ this is milk” or “ I want milk” . Completing full sentences will give syntax forms to the children. Children are expect to  say full sentences in the end.

The third is commenting. Parents are care givers are the first people in children social life. They can give much stimulation to support their children language development. Children who receive positive comments from their parents will have more confidence to speak. When children can answer a question or say a word correctly, parents must give comments for example, When parents ask ‘ What is this?” children say “ this is cat”  the parents must say “ good” .Parents had better not give negative comments directly because negative feedback will only bring negative image and perception to the children.

The last is motivating or enhancing response. This is a type of stimulation for children to complete sentences, for example; children say “ Dad eat …………”  Children sometimes forget or do not know a vocabulary that is familiar. In this situation parents must complete the sentence “ Dad eat bread”  if Dad is eating bread. This learning strategy motivates children to know more vocabularies.

Dialogues are effective stimulation to support children language development. Parents or caregivers must become good models because they are the first people that children copy from. I think everyone wants to give the best for children so that do and speak well in front of them!
